Peonies are known for their stunning blooms and long lifespan, but sometimes you may need to relocate them due to landscaping changes, better growing conditions, or garden redesigns. While peonies are relatively low-maintenance, moving them requires careful handling to ensure they continue to thrive. In this blog, we’ll guide you through the steps for successfully moving peonies. Read on to learn more!
When is the best time to move peonies?
The best time to move peonies is in the fall, typically between late September and early November. By this time, the plant has completed its blooming cycle, and the roots have stored enough energy to withstand the move. Moving peonies in the spring or summer is not recommended, as it can shock the plant and reduce blooming in the following season.
Steps to move peonies successfully
Moving peonies may seem difficult, but with the right steps, they can settle well in their new spot. Preparing the soil, handling the roots carefully, and replanting correctly will help them thrive. Follow these simple steps to move your peonies successfully:
1. Prepare the new planting site
Before digging up your peonies, choose a well-draining location with full sunlight (at least six hours of direct sunlight per day). Peonies grow best in rich, healthy soil, so consider adding compost or organic matter to improve the soil quality.
2. Dig up the peony carefully
Use a sharp spade or garden fork to dig a wide circle around the peony. Be careful not to damage the roots. Since peonies have deep, thick roots, dig at least 12 inches (30 cm) down and gently lift the plant out of the ground.
3. Divide the peony (if necessary)
If your peony has been growing for many years, it may be a good time to divide it. Use a clean, sharp knife to separate the roots into sections, making sure that each division has at least three to five strong buds.
4. Replant the peony in its new location
Place the peony in its new hole at the same depth it was previously growing. The buds should be no more than one to two inches (2.5-5 cm) below the soil surface. Planting too deeply can prevent blooming.
5. Water and mulch the plant
After moving the peony, water it thoroughly to help the roots establish. Apply a layer of mulch to retain moisture and protect the plant through the winter.
Aftercare tips for moved peonies
To help your peonies thrive after moving them, it’s important to avoid excessive watering, as they prefer well-drained soil. In the first year, you may notice fewer blooms, but normal flowering should resume by the second year. Be sure to remove any dead foliage in late fall to prevent disease and support healthy growth. By following these simple steps, your peonies will adapt well and continue to bloom beautifully for years to come.
