When do peonies bloom? This is a common question. Peonies bloom from late spring through early summer. This is a total period of 6 to 8 weeks. The blooms themselves only last for 7 to 10 days. There are various factors that can determine when your peony roots will bloom. We would like to tell you more, so you can grow beautiful peonies in your garden all season long.
Factors that influence the peonies bloom time
There are multiple factors that determine the exact timing of the bloom and the bloom season’s length. These are listed below:
- Species of peony: tree, woodland, herbaceous or intersectional
- Local climate: the blooming time of the peonies is longer in cooler climates (timing of blooming depends on the climate in your area)
- The cultivar of herbaceous peony: Early season, midseason or late variety
The bloom time of the main species
The main species of peonies are: tree, woodland, herbaceous and intersectional. The woodland peony is the first to bloom in early spring. About a week later, the tree peonies follow. One or two weeks later, the herbaceous peonies start to bloom. Near the end of the time the herbaceous peonies are blooming, the intersectional start blooming. If you have all four species of these peonies in your garden, it means that you can have peonies blooming for at least 8 weeks or more!
Do peonies bloom all summer long?
Unfortunately, peonies don’t bloom all summer long. If you want to have peonies that bloom all summer, you will need to plant different varieties that bloom at different times. When you have all above discussed species of peonies, you can have peonies blooming for almost the whole summer.
Tips to enjoy the blooming time of your peonies
A way to enjoy your peonies, is to cut them in the bud stage and refrigerate them. Whenever you want a bouquet, you can take them out. It won’t help to extend the bloom time, but you can enjoy their beauty for many weeks longer.
When the buds are starting to show color and are soft, you can cut them off. Then strip the leaves off the stem and wrap them in clear plastic. It is important to seal both ends. The peonies can be kept in the refrigerator up to three months. When you are ready for a bouquet, you can cut off the end of the stem. Then you place it in lukewarm water in a cool place until they are rehydrated. Now you can enjoy them for at least one more week!
