Paeonia Lactiflora “ALEXANDER FLEMING” is a stunning herbaceous perennial with large, fragrant double flowers that are light-pink with a hint of white at the top of the petals. The fluffy flowers are surrounded by lush, green foliage that creates a lovely backdrop for the blooms. This peony typically grows to 60 cm tall and blooms from late spring to early summer. This makes “ALEXANDER FLEMING” very suitable as a cut flower-peony in both cold and warmer climates as well as greenhouse cultivation. The “ALEXANDER FLEMING” peony can thrive in your garden or field for many years with proper care and maintenance.
Origin Alexander Fleming Peony
Chinese peony or common garden peony, the lactiflora peony is a perennial herbaceous plant native to China, Japan, and Korea. Its huge, fragrant flowers make it one among the most extensively planted peonies.
LACTIFLORA
The lactiflora peony is loved by Chinese for its beauty and medicinal properties. Traditional Chinese medicine treats inflammation, pain, and liver diseases with lactiflora peony roots.
The lactiflora peony was brought to Europe in the late 18th century and quickly became famous among gardeners and plant enthusiasts. Napoleon’s wife, French botanist Josephine Bonaparte, loved lactiflora peonies and popularised them across Europe. Lactiflora peonies were brought to the US mid-19th century and quickly became popular with gardeners and florists. Lactiflora peonies are grown worldwide for gardens and floral displays.
How to plant
What follows are the steps for planting peony roots:
Peonies flourish in locations with plenty of sunlight and well-draining soil. Choose a location that receives at least six hours of sunlight every day and has organic-rich soil. Create a hole that is 30 cm (12 inches) broad and 10 cm (4 inches) deep.To boost soil fertility, loosen the soil at the bottom of the hole with a garden fork or spade and mix in some compost or well-rotted manure. Remove any stones or trash and break up any clumps.Insert the peony root into the hole so that the eyes (or growth buds) face up and are no more than 5 cm (2 inches) below the soil surface. Backfill the hole with dirt, gently firming it down to remove any air pockets.Thoroughly water the newly planted peony root to help settle the dirt around the roots. Soak the soil around the plant using a watering can or hose, being careful not to wash it away.Mulch the plant’s base with a 5 to 7.5 cm (2 to 3 inch) layer of organic mulch, such as shredded bark or straw.
